The Furnishing House grew out of a love for old things—and the belief that what has endured deserves the chance to be used and enjoyed again.
In the early summer, before the shop took shape, our family held what we affectionately called a “furniture hospital.” Aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends worked alongside us to bring long-stored pieces back into the light. Some needed repairs. Others needed little more than a thorough cleaning, a coat of polish, and someone willing to see their beauty again. What began as work quickly became one of the great joys of opening the shop.
We have found just as much pleasure in uncovering the stories behind the objects as we have in restoring them. We research when and where pieces were made, how they may have been used, and what details reveal about their past lives. We may never know every hand a table has passed through or every room a chair has occupied, but learning what we can helps us understand—and appreciate—what has been preserved.
The Furnishing House has also been shaped by the generosity of local collectors who have entrusted us with pieces of their own. Their collections allow the shop to remain varied and always changing, filled with furniture, art, and objects gathered over many years and from many different places.
Local art is an important part of that collection. We are building an ongoing place to discover the work and stories of Water Valley artists—not only during gallery openings or art crawls, but throughout the year. By sharing both the artwork and the biographies of the people who created it, we hope visitors come away knowing more about the creative lives that have helped shape this town.
The building itself is part of the story. As we bring it back to life, we are uncovering the craftsmanship that had been hidden over time. Removing the suspended ceiling revealed the original wooden beadboard above it—one more reminder that sometimes beauty is still there, simply waiting to be seen again.
The Furnishing House is our contribution to Water Valley’s growing community of antique and vintage shops: a place for old furniture, local art, architectural salvage and unexpected finds to begin their next chapter.
